Morphically Primitive Words (extended Abstract) *

چکیده
In the present paper, we introduce an alternative notion of the primitivity of words, that – unlike the standard understanding of this term – is not based on the power (and, hence, the concatenation) of words, but on morphisms. For any alphabet Σ, we call a word w ∈ Σ∗ morphically imprimitive provided that there are a shorter word v and morphisms h, h′ : Σ∗ → Σ∗ satisfying h(v) = w and h′(w) = v, and we say that w is morphically primitive otherwise. We explain why this is a well-chosen terminology, we demonstrate that morphic (im-)primitivity of words is a vital attribute in many combinatorial domains based on finite words and morphisms, and we study a number of fundamental properties of the concepts under consideration.

Complexity of testing morphic primitivity
The word u = abaaba satisfies f(u) = u where f maps b to aba and cancels a. Such words, which are fixed points of a nontrivial morphism, are called morphically imprimitive. On the other hand, the word u′ = abba can be easily verified to be morphically primitive, which means that the only morphism satisfying f(u′) = u′ defined on {a, b}∗ is the identity. Fixed points of word morphisms and morphi...

متن کاملMorphic Primitivity and Alphabet Reductions
An alphabet reduction is a 1-uniform morphism that maps a word to an image that contains a smaller number of different letters. In the present paper we investigate the effect of alphabet reductions on morphically primitive words, i. e., words that are not a fixed point of a nontrivial morphism. Our first main result answers a question on the existence of unambiguous alphabet reductions for such...

We introduce a simple uniform semantic framework that iso-morphically contains major semantics proposed recently for normal, dis-junctive and extended logic programs, including the perfect model, stable , well-founded, disjunctive stable, stationary and static semantics and many others. The existence of such a natural framework allows us to compare major proposed semantics, analyze their proper...
متن کاملProperties of Pseudo-Primitive Words and their Applications
A pseudo-primitive word with respect to an antimorphic involution θ is a word which cannot be written as a catenation of occurrences of a strictly shorter word t and θ(t). Properties of pseudo-primitive words are investigated in this paper. These properties link pseudo-primitive words with essential notions in combinatorics on words such as primitive words, (pseudo)-palindromes, and (pseudo)-co...
